In simple terms, “color temperature” is a method of describing the color characteristics of light. In the past, when we created light by heating a filament, as it got hot enough to glow, the light it emitted would shift in color from deep reds, to yellows, to blues. We came to describe the character of the light based on the temperature at which it was produced. The scale goes from 10,000K (a bright blue sky) to 1,000K (Glowing Embers). Light above 5,000K is considered ‘cool’ and light below 5,000K is described as ‘warm’.

Why should my business switch to LED?


LEDs are significantly more efficient than legacy fixture types - meaning they use less energy for the same amount of light. They are much longer-lasting than legacy fixture types, and are eligible for lucrative rebates in the state of Illinois. ComEd offers $.50/watt reduction in your overall lighting. Depending on your current lighting, this can cover 15% - 30% of the cost of and LED install.

Is LED lighting better than incandescent or halogen lighting?


Around 80-90% of the energy emitted from incandescent bulbs is converted to heat instead of light. LED lighting is about 85% more efficient than incandescent lights and hence do not need as much energy to product the same amount of light. LED lights are also designed to last about 50 times longer than incandescent lighting.




Are LEDs expensive?


The upfront cost of LED lights is higher than conventional lights but they save a lot of money over time from reduced energy usage, low replacement and maintenance costs. But how do you define expensive? Is it the up-front cost or is it the running cost of the light over time or the cost to change the light once it has failed? If it is a new building, installing LED lighting is sometimes the same cost as traditional technology which means you will start to save from the very beginning.




How long can LEDs last?


Good quality LED lights can have a lifetime of 50,000 hours or more but the average is around 35,000 hours. But this all depends on their design and how they dissipate heat from the LED chip. Depending on how many hours they are used a day, Encore LED lights can last as long as 20 years. Unlike other lighting products LED lights do not completely fail – they get dimmer. At 50,000 hours of use (or their rated lifetime), an LED light will be designed to provide at least 70% of its initial light output (LOR). The lifetime is dependent on many different factors including fixture design, LED chip type, ambient temperatures and fixture design. Actual life of an LED is complicated to calculate and should be based on LM-80 measurements (calculated by independent testing labs) of the LED sources. How do LED lights work?


LED lights are based on Light Emitting Diodes (LED) technology. This technology uses semiconductors that light up when electrons are shot through them. Unlike incandescent bulbs and fluorescents, LEDs usually converts a lot of the energy into light instead of heat.




How much money can you save by converting to LED?


Up to 80%! Well, if you’ve been spending $100 on lighting expenses, the fact that LEDs reduce energy consumption by almost 80% means that your lighting expenses will also reduce proportionally. Hence, an 80% reduction in power costs. Meaning, you’ll only be spending ~$20 on lighting with LEDs.




Can LEDs be used with a dimmer?


Dimming is one of the biggest advantages of using LED fixtures. LED lights can be used with 0-10V/1-10V dimming, TRIAC dimming, DALI dimming, and CCT dimming. That way you can enjoy your preferred amount of lighting at any time and with ease.

First of all, LEDs are very eco-friendly. That means that they do not contain any toxic or hazardous materials such as mercury and phosphorus. Also, LEDs reduce the amount of waste because of their durability. One LED fixture can outlive 50 incandescent bulbs. That means using Incandescent light fixtures contributes to waste as well as higher demand for electricity. Another green quality about LEDs is that they have a very small – negligible – carbon footprint. Basically, they don’t contribute to the world’s carbon emissions; hence slowing the rate of global warming and environmental degradation.
